Renewable Energy for Economic Development in the Boucle du Mouhoun Region

Sub-Saharan Africa — Burkina Faso

Client: Global Affairs Canada

CowaterSogema, in collaboration with Windiga Energy, the Electrification Development Fund (FDE) and Énergie Développement Ingénierie Services (EDIS), is implementing this four-year initiative in the Boucle de Mouhoun region of Burkina Faso. The project seeks to increase inclusive and sustainable economic growth in the region by improving livelihoods and employment opportunities for youth, women, and men through the electrification of rural communities and creating an enabling environment for climate smart development. Project interventions aim to support climate change mitigation through the use of renewable energy, including the use of solar panels to power remote health centers, private sector businesses, schools and public institutions. Improved livelihoods and employment opportunities are being made possible through improved access to finance and electricity for entrepreneurs, businesses, and local institutions. Targeted vocational training programs are being implemented to increase the capacity and skills of entrepreneurs, women, and youth to harness renewable energy and promote the development of economic activities in the region.
