325 new houses for the new village of Fadougou in Mali News

18 February, 2019
The opening of the new village of Fadougou, in the Keniéba circle in Mali, took place to the sound of drums on January 31, 2019, during a ceremony where the keys to 325 new houses were handed over. The construction and servicing of these 325 houses, which now form the “New Fadougou”, cost the mining company B2Gold 12 billion CFA francs (CAD 27 million).

The Minister of Mines and Oil, Mrs. Lelenta Awa Baba Ba, and her colleague from Urban Planning and Housing, Mr. Moustapha Sibide, were at the ceremony, along with the Ambassador of Canada to Mali, Louis Verret, B2Gold CEO Clive Johnson and the country director of the mining company, Mohamed Diarra. Notable speeches were delivered by the village chief of Fadougou, the mayor of the commune of Kéniéba, the country director of B2Gold and the Minister of Mines and Oil.

Following the relocation of Fadougou due to its proximity to mining operations, B2Gold, in consultation with the local community, began the construction of a new city in order to mitigate the negative impact of its operations on the community. The new village of Fadougou has 325 new houses, a mosque, a school, a market and a health centre. All the houses are equipped with solar energy, latrines and access to drinking water and meet all the necessary health, hygiene, urban planning and environmental requirements.

The construction work (carpentry, masonry, ironwork) was done by young people from the Keniéba circle, who were recruited and trained on site as part of the AFECK project. The AFECK project, a collaboration between B2Gold and the Government of Canada, aims to facilitate the professional training of local citizens and contribute to the development of communities in the Keniéba circle.
