January 2013: Cowater Inks 19 Million Dollar Contract with the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) for Continued Work in Pakistan

Cowater recently signed an AUD 19.3M Deed Agreement with AusAID to support the Citizen Engagement for Social Service Delivery (CESSD III) project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Province, Pakistan. This project is the continuation of CESSD II, financed by CIDA from 2008 to June 2011 and by AusAID from June 2011 to November 2012.

CESSD’s objective is to enhance citizen engagement with government for effective delivery of gender-responsive elementary education, basic health services, and drinking water in 11 districts of the province of KP, as well as improving the enabling environment. By the end of the project in June 2016, CESSD will have strengthened and formed over 3,000 social service committees, which have the mandate of supporting the management of the school, health centre or drinking water scheme they represent, while ensuring that government services are provided responsively. Gender responsiveness is mainstreamed throughout the project. The project is innovative, and social accountability measures are being introduced and will be used widely by the project’s end. CESSD also works closely with government departments to sustain, support and monitor these social service committees, and to introduce quality standards, better planning at the district level, and more transparency and accountability in general.
